Reborn

Welcome to my new blog!

I have been working on this idea for a long time.  I acutally have a Circle of feathers.wordpress
blog I started January 14, 2010. I wanted to create a blog for my personal, spiritual, and intellectual
interest and Ancient Cloth.wordpress for purely artistic endeavors. My first blog was thepilgrimmage.wordpress, which is no longer available for public viewing.

I like the format of the blogger blogs because it seems to offer so much more.

One thing I have to face is that I have this tendency to be scattered. On one hand, it is a gift but,
on the other it has a way of complicating my life.

In this new year I want to focus my energy in one spot and focus on achieving my personal goals
in life.

The name Circle of Feathers is meaningful to me because as I have blogged over the last couple of years,
I have noticed that I feel like those people whom I have contact with are like a circle of women
at a quilting bee. My Dad's mother was a quilter, who gathered with women of her local church
and quilted.  Even though we are not sitting in the same room I see an ethereal circle of women
sharing our art, our lives, our moments.....

I have been through a lot recently. I know each of us has to walk through the "fire" along
the way.  I began working on this piece after the loss of my Dad.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone for your kind words. It
meant so much to me. I was unable to physically attend my Dad's funeral which,
was very difficult to accept. I know there was a gift in it for me and maybe
someday I will share the little miracles that have happened.

The pine cone seemed a fitting piece to begin with. This would be the view of a pine cone
if you are looking at the top of it.

I have always been fascinated by the pine cone. Just holding it in my hand and feeling
wonder inside at nature.

The pine cone has been likened to the pineal gland in the human and used to symbolize
it.
If you are like me you are probably wondering why and how could the pineal gland
be viewed as something of great significance.

First, let us look at the mathematical significance of the pine cone:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_numbers

Next, the pineal gland was and is often referred to as the "third eye"

One reason it has been so called is due to the fact that it is filled with water
containing rods and cones just like our eyes.
Also, it is shaped just like a pine cone with two tiny appendages.
It sits at the center of our brain.
If you are laying down and looking up the pineal gland
is directly lined up with the spot between your eyes.
In India, women wear bindis (red makeup/paint) to mark the "third eye".

And lest you think it is only some cultures who revere the pine cone....

Osiris staff

A large pine cone at the Vatican surrounded
                                            by two peacocks representing "enlightenment".
The staff of the Pope also has a pine cone
                                            etched into it.

I have another picture of the piece I am working on but
will have to wait until later to share it.
Thank you for continuing along this journey with me.

  1. Marie, What an amazing post. I didn't know anything about the pine cone. I also have enjoyed collecting pine cones. It is amazing just how many there are. I didn't know anything about the math around them. I think it is interesting that the red wood which is the largest tree has a very small pine cone. I guess that is good because if one fell from the top of the tree which they can be a 379.30 ft they might knock you out...or at least hurt. But the cones are only less than 1.5 inches. They also have with 15–25 spirally arranged scales, I never would have thought about this had you not brought it up in your post.
My goal this year is to be more playful...or more curious. Today looking at pine cones renews my child like curiosity. Thank you.
I have enjoyed the pictures at the bottom of this post. You are very inspiring. Just keep creating!!
